Nam Loong is just a tiny shop front but always full and on occasion there is a line spilling onto the chaotic street that is part of Chinatown. Being in the minority Ive always felt was a good sign when rating an asian restaurant.
I had never seen a bamboo steamer so large before. Impressive! There were two stacks next to each other, both four layers high, sitting over giant woks. I wondered what treasures were hidden inside. Having a sweet tooth, I opt for the one with egg custard. There is a choice of about six different varieties, both savory and sweet. Each time the huge lid is lifted, steam billows out and mine is expertly chosen from a sea of identical looking buns to the untrained eye.
I still remember my first time. It was hot, so soft and with this really, I mean really yellow custard in the centre. It had an amazing texture. Its hard not to burn yourself from wanting to eat it so quickly. Mmmmm!
I was hooked! Now every time I head into the city I get excited at the prospect of a custard bun. The disappointment I faced only last week when after a drink at The Golden Monkey, we were too late and they had sold out. There was nothing to replace my cravings so back to drown my sorrows with another cocktail.
When I got home from work the next day I found a single egg custard bun waiting for me!!
